Vaccination policies

In Ireland, immunization is not compulsory

In Ireland, unvaccinated children can attend nurseries, nursery schools and primary schools. It is not a legal requirement to have vaccinations to enter school or kindergarten.

Article 42.2 of the Irish Constitution expressly protects the right to educate children at home, as well as the right to establish non-state schools. The main restriction in this regard is contained in Article 42.3.2°, which establishes that "the State, however, as guardian of the common good, requires, in consideration of actual conditions, that children receive a certain minimum, moral education , intellectual and social".

Section 14 ofEducation (Welfare) Act 2000 requires a register to be kept of all children receiving an education elsewhere than in an approved school. Parents who wish to educate a child at home must apply for registration of the child; requests are evaluated by the Education Welfare Board in light of the education provided, the materials used and the time devoted to instruction, in order to determine whether the child is receiving a certain minimum education. The Council may make registration conditional on compliance with certain requirements or refuse to register the child; in case of refusal, the parents are obliged, under section 17, to have the child attend a recognized school.

Recognition and compensation for vaccine injuries

There is no vaccine injury compensation fund in Ireland, although a government document is considering setting one up. Adverse events can be reported toHPRA (Human Medicines Adverse Reaction Report).
